Well I decided to just put a site up so you guys could see the console my dad and I built. It wasn't too difficult to do, and took about half a day. We are thinking about building another one this winter, and if we do I'll take some step by step pictures this time. Just a note, these pictures really make my car look dirty. It really doesn't look that dirty in person. Anyway, here are some pictures.
Good side view. You can see that the 4 speed doesn't quite fit the original layout of the console. I originally had an automatic in the car when we built it. The front cup holder is now only good for a change holder.
Ahhh, down to business. Wondering what to do with the front, I came up with the idea of a tach. It looks really cool at night when its lit up. Again you can kind of see how it doesn't fit just right with the 4 speed. That open section used to be covered and a place for the auto shifter in the middle.
There are the cup holders and seatbelt holders. The cup holders were easy to get. We went to the store and bought some cheapo cup holders, then used a dremel to make them the right size. We did the seat belt holders because that is kinda like a '68 console. Also becasue there was no place for them.
Here is the lid. Every console has a compartment.
Open the lid! You can see the brackets and screws that we used to put it together. Only a couple screws were vivible on the whole thing. There is a good amount of space in this compartment to put whatever in.
There is the whole thing. This project did not cost very much. Just some wood, small brackets, screws, cheapo cup holders, and the material. You could use anything you want to cover it with. For me it was better than spending $250 on a new one, and plus I wouldn't have a place for my cd player.
